Tattoo - Phase I

Phase 1 of my tattoo is complete. It's a Guam themed tat with the main focus on one of the island's legends - that of the Two Lovers (at Two Lovers Point). There's a huge latte stone below them (which will show more once the shading's done). This stone is found all over the island - pillars upon which huts were built on top of. There's also part of the Guam flag in the background (tree w/boat & water). And, in the center, there's a small outline of the island.

I really can't wait for the shading to be completed in a couple of weeks. For now, I'm sharing only with the few who read my blog.

Week What?

Oy. No weekly updates since my weight's stalled at 166. I'm eating whatever I want to eat nowadays. I still find somewhat HEALTHY things to eat - it's just that I've been eating enough to maintain my weight versus getting down to the 150 pound goal I have for myself by June 26. I can still make it happen if I start changing my eating habits next week.

I really want a six pack. Funny how that's a physical goal of mine yet -- for what? It's not like, once I get there, I'm gonna go up to people and ask, "Hey - wanna see something cool? Check it out?" then lift up my shirt. Or what? If I get my dream abs, will I take a pic and post as my newest profile picture on Facebook? Ummm... certainly not. What's the whole point of getting my bod in that type of shape?

Good question.

I guess I'd HAVE to take pictures if I get to that goal, right? So then, one day, I can look back at it and say, "Wow, I was kinda hot from the neck down at one point in my life." Ugh. That doesn't even sound right.

Maybe I can put myself in a situation where I need to take off my shirt to help somebody out. Like, it's a hot day, and someone has a flat tire. And all I've got is a t-shirt but it's just so disgustingly sweaty so I have to take it off to continue working. Or, this is a little far fetched but... maybe I'll go to a beach. I think people take their shirts off there to relax.

I'm really hoping to be able to seriously get to this dream of mine. I am already kinda seeing the center of my abs separate form the love handles. I mean, it's still a gut but certainly an improvement from four months ago. It's a work in progress. Must move forward with these important bucket list goals.

Run Rodney Run

I'm very very very very very happy with my 12K run today. The Seattle Seahawks were the sponsor of this run in Renton. The 12K distance is not typical - it's the distance of choice because it goes together with the whole Seahawk "12th Man" theme.

Going into the run I had my heart set on doing the best I could do. And I sure did go for it. As much as I love running with my friends, I quickly abandoned them in order to just focus on doing the best I could do. I've done two runs since last fall in which I averaged a 12- and 11-minute mile. I decided that I wanted to improve on those runs and get back to the under 10-minute paces I had back in 2002-2004.

It really felt great. Even though there were several ups & downs with the hills along the course, I was able to maintain a doable pace. At the end of the first mile, I was right under ten minutes. Each mile after that, my pace was actually improving. Once I reached the 6-minute mile, I had been running 57 minutes and knew I could finish the last mile in less than 10 minutes - far under my goal of 70 minutes.

So there I was. Go Rodney go! Just a little more to go. I was in the general vicinity of the finish line and knew I wouldn't take much longer. But after awhile, the course kept wrapping around and around this one area. What the heck? Where was the end? Why were they putting us through this maze? Oh no! My timer showed 67 minutes and I was starting to get worried. Every time I thought I was near the end, ready for a sprint, it wasn't really the end. Adrenalin was pumping through me but I held it back. And by trying to pull back, I started to feel queasy. My stomach. Oh, no. I felt like I needed to throw-up.

Oh gawd. It was getting really bad at one point. I started to mildly dry heave. Oh dear lord - don't make me puke. Okay, a little slower. I'll be okay. Alright, I'm okay.

And there it was. I could see it. The finish line! I was getting super close but... oh crap! No, no, no! The nauseousness was back. But I couldn't stop my legs. I just kept moving and I couldn't hold back the need to puke. I kept praying I wouldn't lose it in front of everyone. It was close but I thankfully didn't hurl. But that didn't mean I didn't look the fool. I was dry heaving over & over & over again. I covered my mouth hoping people wouldn't see. But I know they saw me. So embarrassing! But at least I didn't puke. That would have been horrible.

So, aside from that, I had a great run. Sadly, I finished the race in 1:11:32. A minute and a half longer than my goal of 70 minutes. But the awesomest news is that 12 kilometers much more than 7 miles. It's friggin 7.45 miles. That means I finished with a 9:35 pace per mile. My real goal was staying under a 10-minute pace and I done it.

Here's a pic of us runners:
I'm on the far left next to my pals Roman & Karen. Then there's Leah who ran the 12K with us. Her husband, Fernando, is squatting with their dog Owen. Kat's between the two of 'em. And the folks on the far right are their friends who I just met today.

Next up, is Beat the Bridge in May. It's an 8K. Last time I ran this race in 2003, I lost to the bridge. That's certainly not happening this year.

Week 19: 166.0

Reasons why I only lost 0.6 pounds this past week:

a) Ate lots of junk yesterday (cupcakes, appetizers, etc)
b) Pretty much ate lots over the entire week
c) Didn't have a chance to poop before my weigh-in

For real on that last reason. That really does take about 0.8lbs away from me weight. But, ya know, a loss is a loss is a loss is a loss.

Week 18: 166.6

I lost about 2.6 pounds this week! Whoo hoo! Bad news, is that I just weighed myself (Sunday evening) and I'm up to 171.2 pounds. Isn't that crazy how a very bad day of eating can make your weight fluctuate so much?

Next week, I'll be running the longest run in my life - a 12K run at the The Landing in Renton. That's a seven mile run. Yesterday, I ran five miles broken in half by a ten minute stretching break. I was with a group of folks and decided to do whatever the group did. Felt good but I really wish I had tried my hand at running the whole distance without stopping.

I'll do a couple of more runs this week. Weather's sucky so it's gonna be interesting. I'm tired... time to sleep.

Week 17: 169.2

Dangit. I think I would have hit my 168.0 goal for the week if I didn't eat so badly on Saturday night. I mean, dude, I just kept picking away at bad foods. But 'twas fun and I'm already doing good with my foods and exercise. Still, I have an ultimate 2-4-or-6 pack goal which I need to set my sights on. Also, I feel like my running will be better if I have less weight to carry around. Hence, my goal to get to 150lbs by the end of June. That's still in sight and I know I can do it. I just have to get serious again.

And serious I shall be.

Week 16: 170.4

Oh no! That's right. I gained 1.4 pounds this last week. Weight loss goal = FAIL! It's all good though. I had been doing good the entire week until I went out for some very bad (but delish) meals on Saturday. Three slice of pizza for lunch and then a buffet at a local casino just killed my hopes of losing weight for 16 weeks consecutive.

I probably didn't help myself any by eating at Red Robin where I consumed about 1500 calories for dinner. And I didn't make things any better by having popcorn & cherry coke during a movie. Oh well! It's a whole new week of getting back on target. Next up next week? 168 pounds! I'm comin for ya!

Too Much Apologizing

What's going on with the world today? I think the norm is for everyone to apologize for not taking care of this or that. I write a long email to a huge group of people asking for responses. What happens? Nothing. And, no, I'm not talking about you folks who I'm planning an LA trip with. I'm talking about the people who I go out of my way with to invite to join an NCAA Tournament Bracket. I give explicit directions and BOLD my request for people to let me know when they're done.

If only ONE person woulda responded, I would have been happy. But nobody respects anyone these days. Everyone thinks I do this for fun and I could care less for a response. But I care folks. And the more you a-holes continue doing it, the less likely I'm going to invite you to anymore shit. Yes, I'm pissed. Stop pissing me off. All of you.

Week 15: 169.0

I'm officially below 170 pounds! In 15 weeks, I've lost 30 pounds. That's an average of 2lbs per week. I'm still keeping it at a healthy pace.

I ran the St. Patty's 3.7 mile run early this morning. I can't believe how easily I ran it. I was smiling, laughing, and chattin it up with my friends. I got to a point where I may have been annoying people around me. Next time, I'll go faster than the 11-minute mile pace run today. But my goal was to finish with my friends. I was especially proud of my friend Karen. I don't think she ever thought she'd be running like this but she successfully did it with ease.

I'm gonna try to run hard this week. I'll reserve group runs for completing long distances. But my individual ones, I want to get to a 10 minute mile within the next few weeks. Time to sleep!

On the Waterfront

I brought in my clothes to work to run with my friend Chau. But turns out she took a sick day 'cause her little Charlie was sick. SO, I thought, I'll just run after work back in W.Seattle. But my G was stressing and wanted a little more time to work late. So instead of going home, I chose to hangout downtown to wait for her.

What'd I do to kill time? I took a gloriously wonderfultastic run along the Seattle waterfront. It was so beautiful. It was a little cloudy but you could still see that sun settin off in the west. AND, it ended up being my longest run this year! I ran almost four miles in forty minutes. I was so super proud of myself. I didn't even stop to walk at all. In fact, I added a few interval runs - sprinting every once in awhile. I've now had two great runs in a row. I had an easy 3.5 mile run on Saturday down at Seward Park.

I don't even care about how fast I run these things. Okay, I kinda do. But better times will come with, uhhh... time. For now, I just want to slowly increase my distance and endurance. My plan is working just as I hoped!

By the way, my coworkers might be nice, but I could care less for my job. I'm so over it and the lack of work I'm given. I'm so not being utilized like I could be. Oh well... time to look for another job soon.

Week 14: 172.0

This past week's results was somewhat of a surprise. I lost a whole 1.4 pounds! Food is definitely key to this whole process. Overeat and it's bad news. But by eating a lot of good foods while keeping under a certain amount of calories, I'm remaining on the downward trend.

At this point, I'm not worried about the weight. I'm concerned about making sure I'm eating the stuff that my body needs... all them fruites & veggies, whole grains, and proteins. Focusing on that and knowing how beneficial it is for me is what prevents me (for the most part) from overdoing it on the bad stuff. I'm going on my fourth month of this lifestyle and I have to say it's so easy for breezy.

I am getting a little sick of myself talking about this topic so I think I'll just cut it off right here . . .

Week 13: 173.4

I lost almost another pound this past week. I really was on pace to get to two pounds for the week but then bad Korean food came long. Well, great tasting to me – but not so good on the calories. I had so much that I ate it for 4-5 different meals. If it wasn't for that, I'm sure I would have had more than a 0.8 lb loss this week. Especially considering I've been running a lot and played basketball.

So it's March now. Whenever I think of March, I think of spring. And when I think of spring, I think of nicer weather and getting outside and being active. And, when I think of the nice weather this particular year? I get real excited because, folks, it's a whole new me! I'm not gonna feel heavy or self-conscious about my clothes and not keeping up with others. I'm feeling great because I've worked hard and now I'll be able to enjoy the wonderful weather that'll, ummmm… EVENTUALLY come along.

Week 12: 174.2

Yay! A one pound loss from the previous week gives me over 25lbs lost in twelve weeks! AND, I was still able to get in my three runs. It looks like I'm starting to get a set workout schedule.

Monday: 3-mile run
Tuesday: Basketball
Wednesday: 3-mile run
Saturday: Long run

The other three days will either be a day for light cardio, weights, or rest. I'm still watching what I eat although today and yesterday was pretty bad. I went to an all-you-can-eat Japanese place in Federal way for a birthday. And another b-day celebration was at a casino's all-you-can joint today. I tried to be good both days but I know I took in far too many calories than I normally do. It's all good.

I'm thinking my weight goal is going to be 150lbs now. I'd like to get my tummy completely flat and ready for some six-pack transforming. That really is my goal physique-wise. I've always wondered what it would be like to have great abs. I think I'm on my way to that goal with continued discipline and hard work.

A Visual View

Here's a visual view of what the past eleven weeks have looked like for me.

Week 11: 175.2

A very very very bad week of eating nets only a 0.8lb lost. But it's all good. I got that out of my system and today is the second day of healthy eating again. I predict that next week's results will be *oh* that much better.

What If

On today, the day of love, I can't help but think about how I got to this day. Ten years, one month, and fourteen days of being with my special someone. What if: dot-dot-dot?

What if... certain things hadn't lined up the way they did to bring me where I am today?

What if... a friend of mine hadn't asked me to come with him to the UW Filipino dance troupe back in 1993?

What if... I had decided not to join 'cause I wasn't Filipino?

What if... I hadn't stuck it out and danced and met that girl who, at the time, I wouldn't have one romantic thought of?

What if... I hadn't dated someone else from that dance group but, on a side note, became good friends with her friend?

What if... even though I broke up with this other girl, I hadn't started hanging out with this friend, who's a girl, just as a friend with many other friends (always in a group setting)?

What if... starting in 1998, I hadn't listened to my roommate and didn't start hanging out more & more with this female friend and her other female friend?

What if... I had decided that, nah, we didn't need to hang with this girl?

What if... there hadn't been an open temp position at my company?

What if... my female friend hadn't recently been laid off from her job?

What if... I hadn't asked this friend if she wanted to work with me?

What if... because she didn't work with me, I never had a chance to get to know her even better than I had ever known her before?

What if... we never went out for coffee breaks and lunches and walked to the bus together and became closer than we had ever been before?

What if... I didn't take that leap, to want to be more than just friends, and to see how we could be in a relationship?

What if... she didn't have faith in me and didn't trust in me and never took that chance?

What if... none of this ever happened?

Well, the answer is, I would never have known happiness the way I know it today.

Happy Valentine's Day to my one and only...

Week 10 - 176.0

Whoah. I'm ten weeks into "healthy living" (this is no diet, son) and I'm about 24 pounds less. I still have no idea what my ideal weight should be. I guess that's what a trip to the doctor will tell me. I have to remember to make that appointment sometime next week.

I'm not sure what happened this past week to accelerate the loss. I've been eating slowly throughout the days. I've heard that can help your metabolism. I also had three intense cardio workouts. So that's good. What's surprising is I've had McDonald's, KFC, and Taco Time this past week. Of course, each time I did, I ate something low calorie-ish. Grilled chicken at KFC was a good alternative.

I'm slacking on the running front. My ankle feels "okay" but I just want to give it a little rest before heading out again. I think today will just be elliptical day.

I really gotta up my blog game a little. All I've been writing about is this weight loss junk. But I guess I just want to document all this change that's come over me. Feeling good, Valentine.

Outta nowhere

Damn. My foot's been hurtin all day. The top of the right one. Kinda to the side. Anklish area. This is really gonna put a kink into the whole running thing. Last time I worked out was on Wednesday. Two days ago. And for no apparent reason, I've had discomfort walking today. I really hope a good night's sleep magically makes it all better.

Week 9 - 179.4

Nothing much to say except I lost 1.2 pounds this past week. It's been a week of working out a lot - so I felt like I would have lost much more weight. Not sure what happened but, again, at least I lost something.

And, oh yeah, I've lost 10% of my starting weight having now lost a little over 20 pounds total. I'm feeling good. I'm in no rush to lose another 30lbs to hit my ultimate goal of 150. But, the sooner the better in regards to running that half marathon.
